Below: The famous P 51 Mustang fighter airplane. Designed
and built in record time as World War II began in Europe, it saw
service fighting in both Europe and the Pacific.
Aircraft carriers like the USS Hornet
(below) brought about a complete
change in fighting strategy at sea during World War II. Even the
largest enemy
battleships could be sunk by airplanes launched from the decks of
carriers.

Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.
President Truman believed the bomb saved hundreds of thousands of
lives,
both American and Japanese, by ending the war quickly.
Below: Liberty Ships played a vital role in World War
II.
These were cargo ships, designed to be assembled quickly even by
workers with limited shipbuilding experience. Over 2,500
were built, and helped move millions of tons of weapons
and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean.
