Overall Themes for a U.S. History Class:

1. We stand on the shoulders of giants.  The men and women of America's past and present have created a nation that has become the world's leading protector of the greatest ideals ever developed by the human race.  These ideals include the concept of human equality; individual freedoms such as the right to think, speak, and write without fear; and the freedom to make of yourself whatever your talents will allow.  Also, the concepts of the dignity of the individual; religious freedom; the rule of law; and limits on government power.

2. Don't drop the ball.  Your generation will, before very long, have to carry the ball.  The older generation will teach you how to hold on to it.  Pay attention.  Your future happiness, and that of the human race, depends on it.

3. You are not alone.  As an American, you stand with millions of others, both living and dead, who have been inspired by our nation's ideals.  Learning their stories will help you know what you and your generation can achieve.  Follow the examples set by the best men and women of America, and learn what you can from the mistakes of those who fell short.

4. Life is worth living.  Americans have always found pleasure in living.  In music, dance, art, and family life; in churches and in religious holidays, in business and in sports, even in the struggle to create a better and more just society, Americans have expressed their joy at being alive.  This is one of the most important lessons of American history.
