1.  Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence.  Jefferson was a lawyer from Virginia known for his ability to write well.

2.  Benjamin Franklin, the Philadelphia printer and scientist who played a key role in the independence movement.

   At this point, the text instructs students to refer to the copy of the Declaration of Independence in the Appendix.  They will find and finish the famous lines that declare the basic political principles of the new nation. 

Part 1, A:  "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."

Part 1, B:  "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

Part 1, C:  "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it..."
