The Pictures:
 
1.  A woodcut drawing from around 1500, showing a growing town of the late Middle Ages or early Renaissance era.  The growth of towns and trade during the late Middle Ages led to widespread changes in European society. 

2.  A drawing of Christopher Columbus, based on a painting made years after his death.   No image of Columbus made in his own lifetime has survived. 

3.  A drawing of a large wood sailing ship.  Wind was the only source of power for ocean - going ships until the early 1800s, when steamships were developed. 

4.  The globe, ships, and cargo combine in this picture to make the point  that trade was the main force driving exploration and settlement of the New World by Europeans.
